About The ADOS - Autism
Diagnostic Observation Schedule
The ADOS is a semi-structured interactive test for children and adults
of nearly all abilities and language levels to assist in the diagnosis of
autism. Individuals can be entirely non-verbal for this assessment. There
are 4 different tests which can be administered depending upon the language
level of the individual.
Initially the ADOS was used in research but now has found a wider use in
clinical practice. The information from this assessment is used to diagnose
and to better understand the specific nature of the social and
communication difficulties a child is experiencing and help to rule in or
out the diagnosis of Autism. The information gained from the ADOS can also assist
in treatment planning and monitoring progress.
The test takes 30-45 minutes and is based on activities that are interesting
and engaging. Parents who observe the testing often find it very
informative. A professional needs special training and certifications to
administer the ADOS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should my child have the ADOS?
Yes if you are concerned about Autism and don't feel you have a clear
diagnosis. It can also be useful in cases where a second opinion is
desired. In many instances you don't need to make the decision whether or
not your child should have and ADOS, your doctor or other professional can
help determine whether or not it is necessary.
Why haven't I heard of the ADOS?
It is primarily a tool of psychologists and physicians and it was used only
in research for many years.
How much will it cost?
In my practice it is included as part of an evaluation, when this is
appropriate, for no additional fee. If a full evaluation is not desired, it
can be requested separately by a parent or professional. The fee in this
circumstance including the report is $400.
Does insurance cover it?
Yes, if your insurance covers a regular office visit. Please check with
your individual insurance carrier.
Can my school give my child the ADOS?
In some cases public schools may have a psychologist trained to administer
