About The ADOS - Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule

The ADOS is a semi-structured interactive test for children and adults of nearly all abilities and language levels. Individuals can be entirely non-verbal and there are 4 different tests depending upon the language level.

Initially the ADOS was used in research but now has found a wider use in clinical practice. The information from this assessment is used to diagnose and to better understand the specific nature of the social and communication difficulties a child is experiencing. The information gained from the ADOS can assist in treatment planning and monitoring progress.

The test takes 30-45 minutes to administer and is based on activities that are interesting and engaging to children. Parents who observe the testing often find it very informative. A professional needs special training to administer the ADOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my child have the ADOS?
Yes if you are concerned about Autism and don't feel you have a clear diagnosis. It can also be useful in cases where a second opinion is desired. In many instances you don't need to make the decision whether or not your child should have and ADOS, your doctor or other professional can help determine whether or not it is necessary.

Why haven't I heard of the ADOS?
It is primarily a tool of psychologists and physicians and it was used only in research for many years.

How much will it cost?
Cost varies in the community generally between $300-$500. In my practice it is included as part of the evaluation when this is appropriate. If a full evaluation is not desired, it can be requested separately by a parent or professional.

Does insurance cover it?
Yes, if your insurance covers a regular office visit. Please check with your individual insurance carrier.

Can my school give my child the ADOS?
In some cases public schools may have a psychologist trained to administer the test but it is usually not given by request.
