Our office is pleased to offer secure electronic prescribing for our patients. This process allows us to submit all prescriptions including controlled substances electronically to your preferred pharmacy. For this process to work smoothly you need to keep the office updated of the pharmacy you use and any pharmacy changes.
As many patients know in the case of controlled substances (IE. stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall), these medications previously required a handwritten prescription only. The convenience of electronic prescribing in this case cannot be overstated. It allows us to schedule refills typically every 25-30 days or longer for the standard number of refills (3-4). Be mindful the process for controls requires an extra step with a unique code submitted by the doctor for each and every prescription. This takes a little extra time and we generally approve these scripts by 5 pm each day. In the event your pharmacy will not accept an electronic prescription we can still provide you with a hand written one. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services:
“E-prescribing gives providers an important tool to safely and efficiently manage patients’ medications. Compared to paper or fax prescriptions, e-prescribing improves medication safety, better management of medications costs, improved prescribing accuracy and efficiency, increase practice efficiency while improving health care quality and reducing health care costs through the reduction of adverse drug events and increased prescribing of generic medications.”
